Sadaf Rassoul Cameron

My perspective is largely influenced by the confluence of cultural contradictions that exist within me as a first-generation Afghan American woman. Conflicting labels such as Afghan and American, Muslim and Non-believer/Kaffir, Infidel and Independent, Terrorist color my worldview as a woman and artist. These East/West polarities mark me as perpetual outsider: often seeking integration in my isolation or casting me further into the “other”. I explore the tension of this clash of civilization duality in my work through nuance and subtlety, inviting the viewer into my world of solitude. I use beauty and quietness as a tool of subversion to express the overtly political nature of my simply being. My lens is the bridge to my inner and outer consciousness – reflecting the triviality and apocalypse of both my life and our times.
